Buy This-Kodak Pulse Digital Photo Frame

We continue our journey through one of the biggest gift-buying times around the world with the “Buy This” series.  A countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that with yet another useful gadget gift idea, a touch-screen, wi-fi Digital Photo Frame.

Kodak Pulse

A little over a year ago I began a search for an inexpensive, but easy-to-use internet-connected digital photo frame.  What I found out is there is really only one product that fits that bill – the Kodak Pulse Digital Photo Frame.

I purchased the 10” version of this digital photo frame for my parents.  The frame is fairly easy to set up and use and allows you to send photos over a wi-fi internet connection through a web interface on your computer or via e-mail.  It also as a touch-screen user interface that allows you to manually run through the photos, change the viewing settings (collage, single photo, speed that it switches through the photos etc) and delete photos.  You can of course add photos with the card reader as well.  Check out the complete review of the Kodak Pulse Digital Photo Frame I posted last year.

Kodak Pulse

It’s available on Amazon in two sizes:

10-inch Kodak Pulse Digital Photo Frame $169

7-inch Kodak Pulse Digital Photo Frame $100

Both are great gift ideas for family and friends (or yourself).  And if you’re buying for a less-technically savvy person you can help them set it all up fairly easily without worrying about tech-support phone calls in the future.

Convert Your SageTV Extender Into Squeezbox Music Player

Have you given up on the abandoned (thanks to Google’s purchase of SageTV) SageTV HTPC system?  Still have a SageTV Extender laying around waiting to be sold on EBay?  We'll here’s another use for it, convert it into a Squeezebox networked music player for free!

imageimage

A SageTV enthusiast has created a download package to make the process fairly easy so you’ll be streaming music across your network to your SageTV HD200 or HD300 in no time.

Here’s his initial announcement from the SageTV Forums:

“All,
I'm very proud to announce that after weeks of painful research, coding, cross compiling and testing, I finally managed to "transform" (not in the physical sense of the term of course) an HD200 and an HD300 to a fully working headless squeezebox client connected to a squeeze server...
Why?
Well, the inspiration came after trying the excellent "SageTV Slimplayer" plugin. Despite the plugin did work very well, my requirements were a little bit different, for instance I didn't like the idea of switching my TV on to listen music, also the limitation of one extender at time was a big no-no for me. I currently have 5 extenders in my household and all of them are connected to a separate sound processor and in one instance the extender is hooked up to a Yamaha sound projector which in turns is connected to a video projector, so if I want to listen music in the lounge with the fireplace on, the last thing I want is to turn on the video projector as well. The ideal solution for me would be a Logitech Duet with one Squeeze Remote or some other software solution (Smartphone/iPad/Android), but that would mean buying five of them for a job that an extender is perfectly capable of (wireless connection included).”

Buy This–eBook Reader with e-Ink

We continue our journey through one of the biggest gift-buying times around the world with the “Buy This” series.  A countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that with yet another inexpensive, but useful gift idea, an e-ink e-book reader.

I remember when I thought e-book readers were a silly idea.  Then I tried a Kindle 2 (and then a Kindle 3 and now a Kindle touch) and realized these were great little devices – especially if you read books very often.  Here’s why:

  1. They are fairly inexpensive
  2. You can obtain nearly any book in e-book format
  3. Great battery life (not just days, but weeks of battery life on e-ink readers compared to tablets
  4. It’s light and compact – I find the Kindle & Nook form factor much better than a hardcover or even most paperbacks for reading.  And if you carry your book/s along with you the e-reader format is even better for lighter travelling.  I can carry multiple books with my tiny Kindle without adding weight or bulk.
  5. You can check out e-books from the library

So what to buy?  I personally prefer the Kindle over Barnes & Noble’s Nook although feature and review wise they are very, very close.  I just see Amazon surviving longer than B&N and once you’re in the Amazon (or B&N) ecosystem, it’s just easier and better to stick with that bookstore ecosystem.  I put Sony, Kobo & other e-readers well below the Kindle & Nook.

My current favorites are these two Kindles:

Kindle Touch – $99.00 with special offers

image

Kindle 6” – $79.00 with special offers

image

You’ll also do well with the Barnes & Noble Nook e-ink devices which of course you can check out at your local Barnes & Noble stores.  The Kindle’s can be found in many stores including Target, Best Buy and others.

The tablet – like Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Color are all good choices too, but they are definitely not e-ink devices and so expect them to be heavier, much less battery life and more difficult to read outside due to glare.  The tablets of course do have their advantages, but for book reading purposes the e-ink reader is supreme.

Buy This - Kodak PlaySport Waterproof Video Camera

We continue our journey through one of the biggest gift-buying times around the world with the “Buy This” series.  A countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that with yet another inexpensive, but useful gift idea, a waterproof video camera.

image

This little Kodak video camera is a great addition for simple, quick videos. It takes decent still photos and quality videos as well.  While it lacks a flash, it does handle SD memory cards for easy expansion and most importantly it's waterproof up to 10 feet!  I studied the reviews and watched some videos made with the camera before purchasing as a family gift a few years ago and now there are three of these cameras in my extended family.

Most people have a Smartphone that takes decent video, but for travel the waterproof capability makes this the perfect camera for your trip.  I’ve used this on multiple snorkeling trips as well as at the pool and it works great.  It’s also good even out of the water and nice to not have to worry about getting it wet in the rain or on amusement park rides.

Here’s a video taken with the Playsport Camera:

There are two models available. I own the older, less expensive model Kodak Zx3 Playsport Waterproof Video Camera which sells on Amazon for $89 (other color options sell for more).

There is also a newer version, the Kodak Zx5 Playsport Waterproof Video Camera which starts at $99 on Amazon.

I also have a couple of travel tips for you with these cameras:

1. Purchase a small, foam boat key float and attach it to the lanyard you use with your camera.  This way even if you happen to let the camera fall off your wrist when recording in the water, it won’t sink.

2. Bring along extra SD cards so you can record as much as you want on the trip.

Buy This-Universal Remote Control Harmony 650

It’s obviously a serious gift-buying time around the world.  And a countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that with yet another accessory, the universal remote control.

image

I’ve used countless universal remote controls over the past several years and this past year purchased one of the cheaper remotes that has proven to be my all-time favorite.  The Logitech Harmony 650 isn’t the top-of the line in the Harmony lineup.  Matter of fact I believe it’s being replaced by the Harmony 700 so I’m thinking of snatching up a couple more of these.

Limitations:  5 device limit, not rechargeable, not touch screen, not built-in RF

Advantages: not rechargeable (read on for why), back-lit buttons, simple & smart, easy to use, inexpensive

I’m a long time URC MX-500 fan who eventually moved over to the Logitech Harmony world as I learned that the Harmony system was easier for the non-techie guests in my home.  The problem was the Logitech Harmony 880 I was using was cheaply made (read: breaks easily) and the need to recharge in it’s docking station was less than ideal in real living room testing.  I preferred NOT needing to recharge the remote and being able to set the remote anywhere in the room – because this is where everyone except for me will leave it!

So this year I began searching for a good universal remote.  My search brought me to a surprisingly inexpensive Logitech Harmony 650.  Check it out – it’s a great gift for anyone with a 5-device or less setup.

Logitech Harmony 650 is available for $52 at Amazon.com

If you’re looking for more power (and more device control), check out the Logitech Harmony One

GoogleTV Will Be In Majority of TVs By Summer 2012?

Executive Chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt is a pretty positive guy.  Okay he’s possibly an unreasonably optimistic guy when it comes to GoogleTV.  Here’s what he said at LeWeb 2011 about GoogleTV:

“By the summer of 2012, the majority of the televisions you see in stores will have Google TV embedded in it,”

Don’t believe it?  Here’s Schmidt saying those words at the LeWeb Conference this week

(Video begins at 38 minutes in – thanks to Richard Lawler for finding the clip)

He went on to say “Android will be bigger than iOS” and many other interesting predictions favorable to his company.  What do you think?

Buy Kindle With Special Offers Or Ad-Free?

Because I’m a big fan of the e-ink Kindle readers I often get asked whether to buy the “with offers” version that Amazon introduced this past year or the $30 higher (additional cost of special offers varies depending on which Kindle you purchase) ad-free Kindle e-reader.  Here’s my take.

P1070695P1070698

If you’re buying for yourself, ALWAYS purchase the “special offers” version with the ads.  Why?  Because even if you hate those ads, you can always pay the difference and remove those ads permanently.  This gives you the option to see if you can handle those extra ads or not as there is zero risk.  If you’re purchasing as a gift it just depends on whether your worried about being considered a “cheapskate” or not.

To give you a real feel for the “Special Offers version, here’s what the last several ads look like on the Kindle:

Here’s some additional examples of the types of ads that will display when the Kindle is “locked” – in screen-saver mode.  These change each time you soft-power off your Kindle:

imageP1070705

If you go straight to reading a book, you won’t see any additional ads while reading.  If you go to the home screen list of books on the Kindle though, you’ll see an ad at the bottom of the screen like this:

P1070696P1070699

If you select one of those ads at the bottom of the main menu screen, it will open up a “more information” screen where you can request that offer to be e-mailed to you.

P1070700P1070697

That’s it.  Nothing too invasive, but instead of getting the standard rotation of Kindle covers, you’ll get advertisements er… special offers instead.  I should note that those offers ARE occasionally nice ones, like the save $5 on $10 purchase offer you see in one of the ads above.

To remove the Special Offers via Amazon, go to “Manage Your Kindle’ on Amazon.com and sellect “edit special offers”.  You’ll then see a screen like this:

image

You can then pay up to unsubscribe from the ads.  In my case I’d have to pay $40 to remove the ads for my Kindle touch.  If you already have a Kindle and for some reason you actually WANT to try out the ads on your Kindle, you can go to this same page and turn the ads on.  Those of you in this situation won’t of course have to pay to do this or to turn the ads back off.

So far I’ve left the special offers on my Kindle Touch, although I might attempt a “hack” to remove them just to try it out.  More on that later.

Buy This-Travel Power Strip

It’s obviously a serious gift-buying time around the world.  And a countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that starting with another simple accessory, the travel power strip.

Option #1:  Belkin Mini Surge Protector/Dual USB Charger – this handy little travel power brick comes in at 6.1 x 5.2 x 2.3 inches.  It isn’t tiny, but still fairly compact and weighs only 9.6 ounces.  It also has two USB ports that will charge 5V / 500mA at each port.  Before you iPhone users get too excited about these USB ports understand the iPhone's chargers puts out 5V @ 1A – not the 5V @ 500mA that you get with this one.  You can charge your apple devices with the USB ports on this thing, but it will be slower and only one of the two USB ports at a time as it’s limited to 1A at a time total.

image

I like that the plug end of this power brick rotates 180 degrees so that it fits the position of most outlets.  I’ve used this device in many airports and have shared the power from it with others hovering around the power outlets.

Note:  Thanks David & Scott for the recommendation on this one!

The Belkin Mini Surge Protector/Power Strip is currently available on Amazon for $18.43

Option #2: Monster 4 Outlet Travel Power Strip – I purchased the Monster Outlets To Go 4-outlet power strip about a year ago as I was attempting to lighten my travel load even more.  This compact power strip is even lighter and smaller than the Belkin.  It doesn’t have the USB ports, but it fits wall outlets even better and it includes four plugs!  This is my go-to power strip for travelling.  It measures a tiny 2.2 x 6.2 x 1.8 inches and weighs only 2.4 ounces!  I highly recommend this power strip if you travel much or need a power strip to carry in your laptop bag.

Notice in the photo below (next to the iPhone for size comparison) the cord neatly wraps around the power strip and plugs into one of the four outlets – genius!

image

This photo shows the power strip “unplugged”.  There are two outlets on each side which should be enough for most of us power-hungry tech travelers.

image

The Monster 4-outlet travel power strip is currently available at Amazon for $9.15

Buy This–blueLounge CableDrop

It’s obviously a serious gift-buying time around the world.  And a countless number of “bad” gifts will be purchased and gifted only to be tossed aside to join the museum of bad gifts.  Unfortunately well-meaning tech-centric gifts often end this way.  I’m here to change all of that starting with a simple accessory, the blueLounge CableDrop

image

These are simple, flexible cable management clips for your desk and other locations you need to keep those cords under control.  There’s an peel-off adhesive on the bottom of these so you can place them anywhere.  I use them at my home office, bedside table and at work.  The look nice, don’t cost much and they work.  These are an easy, useful gift that could be used as a stocking stuffer for your favorite geek or pretty much anyone who deals with cords – read: anyone!
