Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All!

I wish all readers of GeekTonic.com a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I hope you all enjoy time with your family and friends and possibly even get a few cool gadgets as a bonus.

Thought I’d throw in a little something extra in this years annual Christmas post.  I’ve followed Jeremy Jones MultiMedia PC’s site for over a year now and last year noticed a little hobby of his – he creates house Christmas light shows matched to music.  Here’s a display from this year:

Check out other music matched with Christmas lights at his lights2music.com site.  Very cool

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Aftermath - What Gadgets Did you Get or Give?

Well by now most of us have survived Christmas and many have some new gadgets they received (or gave) as gifts.  Tell us in the comments what you got!

My guesses are the majority of gadget gifts included these types of things:

  • Blu Ray Player
  • Movies – Blu Ray or otherwise
  • MP3 player
  • iPhone or other mobile phone
  • HDTV, HD200, new PC, monitor, wireless router
  • PS3, XBox360 or Wii
  • Video Games
  • More Storage (Hard Drives)
  • HTPC Extender like the SageTV HD200 Extender/Player
  • Media Player like the Popcorn Hour or HD200
  • Digital Camera/Camcorder
  • Computer/Laptop
  • Home Theater Components

A few of my geekier toys I received:

  • 46” LCD TV Sharp 46SB54U (family gift we found a deal of less then $900).  This is by no means the best HDTV we could have gotten and probably not up to Ben D’s high standards but it fit the bill (and budget) for us and I’m very happy with it.  Currently testing the new SageTV HD200

I gave (or recommended) a few techie gadgets too:

  • Tiny WD External drive for my teacher wife for her PowerPoint and video clips
  • Wii Fit – a bit better than I expected.  Don’t know if it will help us much, but it’s actually kind of fun
  • LG Shine Mobile phone for the kid
  • Cheap, but working DVD Player for the college kid (less than $40 at Walmart)
  • EyeFi for my Dad (I really like this one - now I’m hoping he’ll actually offload photos when he takes pictures…)

I’m still holding off on the Blu-Ray Player purchase.  No particular reason why other than the fact I don’t care at all about the extras that come with Blu-Ray players and I can’t yet integrate Blu-Ray with my HTPC setup.  Even still, I’ll probably will bite on that sometime in 2009.

Okay, it’s your turn – tell everyone what you got this year in the way of gadgets.

Add Christmas Cheer to your HTPC with Holiday Themes

Want to add a little special Christmas spirit to your Home Theater PC (HTPC) this season?  If you use SageTV, MediaPortal and BeyondTV you are in luck as each of these HTPC programs have Christmas themes you can install and use on your own HTPC.

SageTV

I've been working on several themes for the SageTV addon "SageMC" recently and decided to experiment with a few different Christmas themes to begin learning how to make my own themes for SageTV.  I'm fairly happy with the ones I've made so far.  The Christmas themes for SageMC include:

Installation Instructions and Download for the Holiday Sleigh Theme

Next I made a Holiday Snowman Theme for SageMC:

And finally the Holiday Christmas Tree Theme for SageMC:

I created the icons in each of these themes by modifying the icons from the BlueTwo theme with a little santa hat.  The background images were found at PS3-themes.comThe SageTV Christmas theme discussion thread has more information as well.

Media Portal

Media Portal seems to have a new Christmas theme each year and 2008 is no exception.  This year we have two Christmas Themes:

First up is the Blue3 Christmas Theme staring the MeePo characters:

The second MediaPortal theme this holiday is the 2008 Christmas Theme by forum user "spragleknas." :

Snapstream BeyondTV

Finally we have a Christmas Theme for Snapstream BeyondTV.  This one was created three years ago but still looks very nice:

Hope these add a little Christmas spirit to those of you who enjoy the holidays.  I was going to make a bah humbug theme as well, but haven't had the time to get it finished.  If you know of any other HTPC Holiday themes including those for other holidays let me know in the comments.  Merry Christmas from GeekTonic!

Holiday Card Mail Merge with Gmail

xmascards The past several years we've struggled over how to best manage our Christmas card list for making mailing labels.  I used to export our address list from Microsoft Outlook and then filter out the non-card contacts using a Christmas label, but now our contact list is all on Gmail.  Here's the super simple and easy way to make your Holiday Card Mail Merge using Gmail (obviously many other e-mail and address book programs will work for this as well, but gmail is simple, free and works well for the contact export.

Manage your list of contacts (those that will be getting Christmas cards) using the "other" field in your Gmail contact record.  then, put "xmas" or some other label to denote those who you want to send cards to - I maintain this list throughout the year, but during the Christmas season, I make sure I add this label for anyone who sends me a card.

Once you're ready to make the labels you export the list to an Excel file, do an auto-filter on the "other" field and your list is ready.

Then do a simple mail merge into Microsoft Word or your favorite word processor and print your labels.

Holiday Project-Make a Life Timeline For Organizing Photos and Memories: Part 1

timelineHave you ever spent time going through the tons of photos you have stored on your hard drive or even the printed ones in boxes wondering what year was that taken?  Maybe you've forgotten the name of a friend or relative in one of the photos?  I know I have and as I get older, I find it more and more difficult to keep track of those things.  To solve this problem I've created a family timeline.

The end result will include the following:

1. A summary timeline like the one you see at the top-right of this post.  Major years are noted at the top with a photo below each year denoting a significant even for each noted year.

2. A detailed timeline with every year listed along with one or more milestones that happened each year.

3. An organized group of digital and possibly even printed photos that will be easily accessed and well documented for future viewing and use.  When you want to put together a "memories" slide-show or video for weddings, graduation, funeral or whatever; you'll have an easier time finding and organizing the slide-show or video.

PART 1: Gathering the Data for the Timeline

Start your family timeline now.  Use this Thanksgiving and Christmas time while you are together with your family to pinpoint those memorable dates and even those people in those photos.

This can add to your Holiday, family gatherings by accomplishing several things:

  • Since the family will be getting together this Thanksgiving, this is a perfect opportunity to asking the family members I don't see as much questions about "what happened, when it happened , where it happened," etc.  This will not only help establish many milestones you might not have remembered, but will also initiate some interesting stories for discussion with the family.
  • This will be a good time to pull out old photos and ask questions about themHave several post-it notes ready to take a few notes as you'll use this on the non-digital photos to tag them.  You can scan these to digital later.
  • Pull out your laptop and show off your digital photos - you know the ones you never have printed.  Again use tagging to tag the photos with names, dates and descriptions.  Use Flickr, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Picasa or iTag to tag all of the digital photos you can.
  • Once this thing is completed, you'll have a better way to organize all of my photos because they'll be tagged with dates, names and events.

fam

Here's how to get started on your family timeline:

1. On a notepad, google spreadsheet or excel spreadsheet list out as many milestones in your life as well as your family members lives (important and memorable events) as you can.  Start with things like birthdates, vacations, marriage, jobs etc.  It can be as simple as the spreadsheet below.  Dates and events are essential.  Any additional information is just gravy.

timeline1

2. Add as accurate date information as you have.  At least the year for each milestone - when you're not sure list the year ranges.

3. Put those milestones down in a time-line format - in chronological order.  Leave plenty of space for extra data to be added.

4. More than likely you'll have some holes in your timeline.  Missing dates, people events etc.   This is where your family comes in.  Ask as many questions as you can about memories and take notes.  Pull out those old photos as I mentioned above.  This will help start the conversation and get those memories churning.

Just remember, at the end of this process you'll have those boxes full of polaroids and those hard-drives full of photos much more organized when you're finished.  Plus you'll likely know a lot more about your family once your finished.

That should keep you busy over the holidays while the family is gathering.  You'll then have the beginnings of a timeline of your life and your families life.  Next, in part 2 we'll make a more professional-looking timeline using excel and then use that timeline to organize and tag your photos.
