This is an awesome run down. Thanks for tracking down all the info. I think that the strike will be a lot harder on the new shows. I would have canceled back to you and carpoolers as well, but I hate to see some of the other new shows suffer because people stop paying attention. I'm going to take it easy on the TiVo from now on and hopefully, I won't notice too much of a break.

As long as Kitchen Nightmares keeps going I'll be happy.

"And NBC in all of their stupidity are considering a replacement scab for Leno to keep the Tonight Show on the air." - It's not stupidity. Leno is being extremely greedy and selfish and hurting those who most need the income - the lighting, sound and other staff associated with the show. It's fine for him and the other writing staff, who already get paid handsomely, but not for those low paid workers who can't afford to miss possibly months of pay. NBC should fire Jay and all of the writers and hire on a permanent basis whoever wants to host the show now.

Brent Evans said...

Anonymous,
Can't see how it's really Leno's fault here, but whatever.

For all we know, Leno is paying the strikers and the production crew like Letterman is. Since Leno & Letterman are members of the WGA it wouldn't make much sense for them to cross the picket lines now would it?

Anonymous said...

I do not believe Back to You has been permanently cancelled. The article you cite as the source was referring to a planned holiday hiatus that the show will not resume filming after now because of the strike.

Anonymous said...

What about NCIS?

Crotchy said...

Reaper was filming an episode last night in Vancouver at the Crush nightclub. They have one or 2 more episodes.

Anonymous said...

What about The Unit? I heard they have 3 left as of 12/1.

Anonymous said...

Carson Daly is doing new shows without the writers.

Brent Evans said...

Crotchy: I've heard that Reaper has no more episodes, but I certainly could be wrong.

NCIS has 3 more episodes remaining.
The Unit has 1 episode remaining.

I've added info above on the Unit and NCIS and will continue to track those two shows.

Thanks for the comments!
Brent

i really can't believe some of you commenters. do you have any idea what's going on here? this isn't about a bunch of super rich writers being greedy! WRITERS ARE NOT RICH! this isn't to say that SOME lucky few writers aren't raking it in, or that a few who happen to be the hosts of their shows (like Leno) aren't living pretty large. but we're talking about ALL the writers as a whole here. not a few rich ones. it would be truly shameful for the ones who don't need the money to cross the picket line to better serve themselves and watch the lesser paid writers lose their right to a fair income...or possibly even lose their jobs entirely.

furthermore, it's not the writers who are being greedy here! it's the corporate guys who have zero input into the manufacturing of the shows which entertain america and bring in tons of money for their companies. they are the truly rich ones, yet they think it's unfair to pay the writers of their programs whenever their material gets distributed on dvd and the internet. SOMEONE is making a ton of money on those dvd and internet sales and advertising revenue! and the writers are entitled to their share. it's that simple.

blame the rich c.e.o.'s, not the modestly paid writers. and stop being a bunch of totally closed minded idiots who think everyone who has a job in hollywood is automatically spoiled and rich.

writers sell there scrip to make a show not to make dvd sales or internet sales its for the show they get paid for the show the so called "ceo's" take the risk and put the product out on dvd and internet after its been aired and spend there money on the production costs they are intitled to the revenue from that seeing as its there doing not the writers, the writers are being greedy.

I heard Grey's has 1 episode left, being that only 10 have been aired and they had 11 episodes filmed

The as we are seeing.... without the writers there are no shows!! how can we make a difference and tell them that the writers need their demands met?? I mean seriously!! The writers are the ones who have the creativity and really make (or break) a show... people will always want to act, but they are merely acting what the writers have created!

And the natives (i.e., home viewers) are getting increasingly restless. My wife and I wound up watching "Masterpiece Theatre" last night!!! I'm seeing people posting agitated demands for new episodes of "Heroes" at public opinion sites like http://www.holyshnikes.com. God! People are even reading the L.A. Times Calendar section again for just a taste of TV. It's as desperate as licking the paper on the bottom of an empty pizza box!

I am incredibly dissillusioned by by both the writers and producers to reach an agreement. Television had finally started to crawl out from the reality tv hell hole it has been trapped in for more years than I care to remember. All that progress is rapidly evaporating. Remember that as you watch 5 nights of deal or no deal or american idol.

skye said...

We won't be watching any game or reality shows in our house....never have, never will. But I agree with the 1/6/08 anonymous post. We were finally getting some good shows and it is a shame. I really hope people turn off their TVS instead of tuning into the mindless junk that will be airing.

Any word on how many Law & Order (the Original) shows were shot for this season? I see the show is missing from the list.

Brent Evans said...

To the person asking about Law & Order (the original) there are 8 reamaining as of 1/7/08 (9 of 22 were made)
I'll update the chart with this info tomorrow. Thanks for the question. With so many Law & Order's out there I just missed the original!

Anonymous said...

WOW!!! Thanks for taking the time to write up this rundown on all the shows. It's amazing, and it has every show. I miss my television shows, and hope it the strike ends soon, even though we probably won't see new shows this season even if it does.

Dave said...

according to http://www.spoilerfix.com/smallville.php

there should be 6 episodes left for smallville

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the update on Law & Order and thanks for keeping this comprehensive list. Very helpful. At least there are 11 more Simpsons left.

Brent Evans said...

Dave,
You're correct. I verified with a few sources and it is six episodes of Smallville remaining. I'll have the list updated tomorrow a.m. sharp.

Thanks for the tip.

This strike is so ridiculous. Just give the writer's the small amount of money they want. They only get 2% of all profits made from episodes regularly and they just want some of the pay the networks are getting from online advertisement revenues. It sucks that all my favorite shows are on the 0 episodes left list. This isn't about money anymore, it's about pride. The network executives don't want to look like door mats who can be walked all over. And now everyone has to suffer because they are too prideful to cave in and give the writer's the money they deserve.

Anonymous said...

The information about Men in Trees is incorrect. The number of episodes remaining may be accurate, but the next air date is not until late February. There is a countdown for it posted on the ABC site for the show.

I agree with you Kristen. This strike really bums me out. I miss all my tv shows!!! I do think it is definitely necessary though and the writers are deserving of what they request. Why is it so hard for people to compromise?? Whoever is denying them what is rightfully theirs are the truly selfish and stubborn ones in the situation. People seriously disappointment me sometimes.

Brent Evans said...

You're correct about Men in Trees. Looks like ABC switched around their schedule again. It's getting really difficult to keep up with the networks as they move those few remaining new episodes around their schedules a lot. Thanks for the tip.

I think *everyone* involved needs to be careful here, on how long they let this strike go on. Once mass television starts to become affected, I think the public will start to care less and less about the writers "plight", and will just start to grow increasingly "ticked". Many of our favorite shows' seasons are already interupted and permanently affected. Even if the writers reach an agreement tomorrow- scripts, production/filming can't immediately resume, so the shows' seasons will have to be reshuffled and postponed. Additionally, plot lines/characterizations we've grown to love may be in jeopardy and you know that everything that comes back after the strike will be scrutinized. Who knows if the "agreement" will even call for the same writers on the same shows?

It may sound like I don't support the strike- and as a rule, I don't support "striking" as a way of settling labor disputes. I don't get to stop working because I don't like what I'm paid. BUT, the big difference is that my boss is not getting millions in *residual* income off of my labor.
That is the big difference in hollywood. Someone mentioned that it is the producers that take the risk, and put up their money, and the writers are the ones that just sell their script to be produced. But it's a little deeper than that. The majority of payment in the entertainment industry (unless you are Julia Roberts or Denzel Washington!) is delayed compensation or through residuals. Networks will pay based on the income that a show (and movie) will generate. A small amount is paid upfront and then certain %'s are promised based on the success. Shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Frazier did very well, go into syndication and are now in reruns- those actors are still getting paid. I bet the writers aren't. DVD sales, Internet sales (which is the 21st century market now) generate billions in residual income for these shows- Julia Louis Dreyfus sees money, Fox Video execs see money- the writers see none. The show, they helped *create* is still generating residual income and they are seeing $0. I dont think it's greed as much as it is the insane DISPARITY between what the execs and actors see in residuals and the small amount writers only see up front. The average/median salary of a writer is $62,000/year.

That should read generate *m*illions- although I"m sure they would like for it to generate *B*illions :-)

What a shame it has come to this. Myself I guess I am tired of everyone everywhere being in control of us ie. Jane Public.... what if the public went on strike what the heck would the big guys do? Seem to me we always allow others to be in control as we never unite against anything the gas prices, the irs, increasing taxes, insurance hikes, and on and on. I think if all of us ever stand together it would be amazing. If everyone of us just turned the tv off for one week what effect would that have on tv.

Anonymous said...

Heya, there are *3* episodes left of dirty sexy money. Unknown when they will air them though.

Anonymous said...

This is a great re-cap of where all the favorite shows stand! Thanks for putting this together, and for being the #1 result on google when searching "writer's strike update."

I have to say, the CEO's really need to come up with a solution. I agree with the writers and I understand where they are coming from. Oddly enough though, everyone will start to see the results of this soon, including those CEO's! Viewers are upset, actors too, and without new episodes, there will be no Season DVDs to market! Not to mention these shows are probably losing their following during this strike! I know I get so frustrated when Grey's is a repeat, I may eventually forget to tune in once it finally does come back!

GG Schiller said...

ummm
can i just say something. now i understand the writers are feeling mistreated...but when they agreed whatever it was they agreed with the CEO's or whoever they made their deal with, the writers probably made a contract which would have said that they would work for an entire season, as this is generally how i think it works. by striking they are braking a contract they agreed to and therefore they are in the wrong. But if i am wrong about this contract then they (the writers) are selling their script. Which is essentially paper with choice words on it, this is what the CEO's would be buying not the the work of the writers like they do with actors. therefore the CEO's own the scripts and can do with it what they want and the writers would not be able to claim royalties. To sum this up i am basically saying that it is a buisness and that the writers would have signed a contract either way and should not complain and if they never signed a contract then they are entitled to nothing

Anonymous said...

If a person can't survive on $62,000 per year, even in California, then there's something seriously wrong.

Now that's off my chest, if it wasn't for the studios, CEOs, producers, actors, etcetera, the writers wouldn't have a show to write for in the first place.

The writers are striking for more money - call it residuals or whatever else you want, but it's boils down to more money. The writers are basically saying "We won't go back to work unless we get more money!" Sounds like greed to me - or a really bad Hollywood script. In case you can't tell, I have no sympathy for them.

This is a great list, but it demolished the bit of hope that I had left that I would be able to watch SVU, Grey's Anatomy or Private Practice again this season. What about Women's Murder Club? I don't think that I saw that one on the list.

A lot of you here are just complaining. I personally don't care who is being greedy in this situation. I just want it to end. I read through all of the comments hoping to find something that we, the public, can do to help end the strike. Anyone have any ideas?

Brent Evans said...

Chrissy,
Thanks for stopping by. Actually Womens Murder Club is at the bottom of the deadpool list. No episodes remain for this season. Last I heard it hadn't yet been picked up for a second season either.

gemnoire said...

Being a UK show, Torchwood is unaffected by the strike and has 13 episodes in total this season (12 left?), which are all complete. UK series, being shorter, tend to have finished recording by the time they air (shows doing badly are consigned to graveyard slots rather than cancelled mid-run).

Chrissy asked above and I would like to reask: what can we, the public, the viewers, do to help the writers at this point?

I love watching these shows and believe that without talented writers, our best shows like 30 Rock, Lost and Grey's Anatomy will disappear, and television will die.. just scanning the channels lately has been an ominous warning. I see nothing but reality shows and Golden Girls reruns.. what?!

can we write letters? are there petitions? please point us in the right direction and let us know what we can do to show our support.

Great stuff, but you are off about scrubs. It never did air on the 24th.

Hey I like NCIS & Las Vegas, Boston Legal was good kind've getting too silly But I can live without TV. It's amazing how many not so old & old movies I have been enjoying renting from our Library for just $1.00 a week. And reading novels again.
I don't know the details, so how can I relate to the writers, they know what job they are getting into, if they get a back end percentage of the profits the bigshots should up that so if the shows make good the writers make good - across the board it's a business. Hey I'm stuck in a commission based job & I pay too much for medical insurance that screws me on technicalities, I had to make a 2nd mortgage just to manage for as long as I can, I never knew my job would beat me down I do all the hard work & have to keep learning and supply my own working tools. I am too old to change jobs but if it's the bottom of the barrel to be a writer get out of it.
I would want the writers to make a good living not have problems & if there is a way to work it out to there satisfaction I hope they get it. But look over your shoulder there's a ton of talent in this world online & if you try to overshoot ya might just be loosing something you really love to do.

Hope it works out soon.

You're right they better not demand unreasonably there's no way they are safe for much longer.

There's always fresh new organizers & talent. Someone can start a different writer "corporation" without a Union.

I'd love to make $62,000 average.

Writers are just making everyone angry. TV will pick back up when you are long gone, sorry but you went into the deal with your eyes open. Guess what sports will always be on in the mean time. Plenty of History Channel & other stuff.
:( Who cares anymore, with everyone having to payout for digital TV soon why don't you kick back to the audience that supports you!

Excuse me! Some of you commenters are bein down right rude and hasty. Yes, I'm upset that all of the shows on TV I watch are on the list, but I'm not complaining. The new rush of reality TV is annoying as hell, as I can't stand those shows at all. But this is not the writers faults.

Yes, they are striking and they want more money that doesn't make them greedy. Sure the c.e.o.'s take a risk by putting the media out there for us and producing the show, but like it or not - a show is only as good as it's writers are. No matter how good the actors are, it means nothing unless the script is worth it.

When you say only 11 episodes remain on simpsons and 5 episodes of smallville remain et., Do you mean that is the end, or just for untill the strike is over?

In reference to the original blog: good and to the point, thanks.

In reference to the strike: We can say whatever we want about whether they should/shouldn't strike, should/shouldn't get more money, should/shouldn't retain their jobs, etc. The fact remains, though, that the people who are angry with the writers for taking away something they enjoy are people who greatly value the service writers provide. We can't be all upset that we don't have our tv but then say it isn't worth more than what we're paying for it. If no one cared that the strike happened because no one cared about tv, then yes, the writers wouldn't be worth paying. I think that is clearly not the case.

Have you stopped updating your blog?

Brent Evans said...

No,
I'm updating the blog more than ever these days. This post however was getting a little stale now that the writers strike has been over for a month or so. If there are still folks interested I could continue to update this post, but eyeballs have dropped tremendously on this story.

My plans are to do a complete post in more of a schedule style showing all shows with episodes coming up. Another post is on its way with the Summer and Fall 2008 seasons as well.

Hey,

I just wanted to let you know that this site isn't as updated as you think it is. You say that Moonlight is scheduled to return yesterday. I checked the CBS website and it's not starting again until the 25th.

Not criticising, just letting you know.
