I’ve been incredibly impressed with the ZuneHD UI and the look & feel of the ZuneHD hardware.  It’s simply a beautiful device.  Starting today you can pre-order one from Amazon (affiliate) for delivery September 15th.

I’m on the fence on whether to purchase.  I definitely do not need it as I have a perfectly fine iPod Touch 2g.  But my gadget envy is pushing me to pick one up…

You can pre-order the Zune HD 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black) for $219.99

or the Zune HD 32 GB Video MP3 Player (Platinum) for $289.99

GeekTonic Back From Vacation

Some may not have even noticed that I was out of the "office" for the past week or so, but others might have noticed my slow response to e-mails and comments was even slower last week.  So I thought I'd shed a little light sun on the story for you.

About 11 days ago I left with my wife to vacation in Florida and catch a short (read much-less-expensive) cruise.

While the goal was to get away from it all, I still managed to stay sort-of connected.  I did some pre-cruise blogging over the weekend (all blog posts last week were auto-posted in advance) from our deck and the B&B's beach at Key Largo.

Blogging From Key Largo

Keen eyes will notice the laptop still has XP powering it.  Looking forward to our work moving to Windows 7 at some point next year.

Next it was time to board the ship, but the timing just happened to be when the Apple WWDC keynote was going on so I checked my ubertwitter (for blackberry) app religiously to keep updated on the Apple WDC news - of which I was mostly disappointed in other than the nice price-drop on the old iPhones.

After heading out to sea I chose to not pay the premium for WiFi access on the ship and instead just enjoy being disconnected from the internets.

So during the Cruise we mostly relied on our iPod's (Shelly has the iPod Classic and I have the iPod Touch) and Shelly's Kindle 2 for our technology needs.  You'll note in the photo below, Shelly has become very comfortable with bringing the Kindle 2 with her - even to the beach.  A simple plastic baggie is a nice protector for the moments you might be worried about the elements, but the Kindle 2 performed admirably in and out of the sun just like the traditional paperback.

iPod Classic and Kindle2 on Beach

(Yes that's our cruise ship off in the distance - and Shelly's gadgets on her beach chair)

When the ship stopped at Key West I had one more chance to catch up on some e-mails and real news during the trip.  Unfortunately though my Blackberry was so full of e-mails it seriously buzzed with new notifications for over an hour (yes I was too lazy to shut off the notifications) until it ran out of battery before the day was over.

On the way back we had plenty (more than we really wanted really) time in the airport so rather then deal with the poor WiFi service in the two airports I was in I used my trusty AT&T USB 3G along with the laptop to begin catching up on the techie news I follow.

We also both carried compact cameras - mine is a Panasonic TZ5 which I dearly love and Shelly's is a small Sony.  I left the handheld GPS at home this time as our ports weren't anything too exciting and Shelly always gives me a very hard time about the "bag-o-gadgets-and-wires" I always carry with me.  Since returning home I've been working hard to get caught up on the goings on for GeekTonic and at work.

ZuneHD Confirmed with XBox Live Tie-In

Well, the ZuneHD rumors have now been confirmed by Microsoft and it's coming this Fall.  And they are talking about a tie-in with the XBox Live service too.

Zune HD

Looks like the ZuneHD is targeted as a direct competitor to the iPod Touch.

A press release by Microsoft tells us the following about the new ZuneHD:

  • The Zune HD comes with a built-in HD Radio receiver - I like this idea although it's not something I'd pay much extra for to get the feature.  Still its a differentiater that should help.
  • It comes with a OLED touch screen interface and a 16:9 widescreen format display (480x272 resolution)
  • A high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) audiovisual docking station that connects direct to an HD TV in 720p is available at an additional cost
  • Zune HD will include a full-screen Internet browser optimized for multitouch functionality.
  • Zune HD is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing for instant streaming to the device from the more than 5 million-track Zune music store.
  • "Zune will be a premium partner in the Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace."  This means TV, movies and games could be accessible to the Zune through the Xbox Live Video Marketplace

I see a few things here with the Zune HD that are interesting for sure and I definitely would love to see Apple get a little more competition on the iPod front.  But you know what I see glaringly missing from the Zune HD press release?  There is no mention of any Microsoft MediaCenter tie in - absolutely none.  I hope I'm wrong on this, but this really sounds like once again MediaCenter is not going to get "connected" to another Microsoft hardware device.

The ZuneHD Website is now live as well.

Kindle for iPhone Has Arrived!

Kindle iPhone

You read right.  The Kindle iPhone/iPod Touch app that allows your iPhone & iPod touch to read kindle books without a Kindle Reader has arrived.  Since I'm just finishing up my last edits of the dual, GeekTonic Kindle2 reviews this timing is pretty good.

What does the iPhone Kindle App Do?

You can now shop for books, magazines and newspapers, and add them to your iPhone or iPod Touch via the Amazon Kindle Store.  And then wirelessly transfer those books to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Kindle iPone

Features:

  • Purchase kindle book, magazine or newspaper from your iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac, PC or iPhone and then wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone
  • Read preview first chapters of any book before you purchase
  • Download the Kindle books you already own for free!  Huge benefit to current Kindle owners!
  • Adjust the text size, add bookmarks and view the annotations you created on your Kindle device
  • Supports "whispersync" which allows you to seamlessly switch back and forth between your Kindle device and Kindle for iPhone and maintain bookmarks and reading location between devices.
  • Books purchased on the iPhone can also be read on the Kindle of course.

Honestly, I can't see reading an entire book on my iPod Touch.  It's just not designed for such a function, but it certainly makes sense to use as a supplementary reading device to go with my Kindle 2.  And I can see reading a magazine or newspaper article on the iPod Touch.  UPDATE:  Unfortunately, it appears the magazines and newspapers are not yet enabled on the iPhone Kindle app.  Very disappointing.

I'm expecting to see these sort of apps on many more devices like the iPhone soon.  Great move by Amazon.  Now if they would just tweak that Kindle 2 price down several notches we'd be in eBook nirvana.

My First Experience With the Kindle App

Since this news broke just as I was heading to bed, I rushed to try it out (of course).  I installed the app, typed in my Amazon.com email and password and almost instantly saw the books I had purchased for the Kindle2 listed on the iPod screen.  The newspaper was not there however so I'm not sure if that is syncing.

I downloaded one of the books to try it out and it took only a few seconds.  A couple of things I noticed immediately while reading the book:

  • Landscape mode does not work for reading the book - bummer.
  • There is no shrinking and expanding the page like you can with a photo on the iPhone.  You can slide a page left or right to go to the next or previous page.
  • There is a font size in the menu so you can choose from five different font sizes for the book display.
  • There is a "Go to" menu item that displays the following options:  cover, table of contents, beginning, location (enter a book location 1-5906) and my notes & marks (notes or bookmarks just as you have on the Kindle).
  • You can't purchase books or periodicals right from the iPhone - at least yet.  But you can purchase the Kindle from the iPhone ;)  Nice of Amazon to throw that feature in...

Overall, navigation is pretty easy and reading on that tiny screen is actually not all that bad.  As I said I wouldn't use it to read for a long period of time, but it's definitely not bad in short spurts.  I'll report back after a little more sleep.

iPod Without iTunes

This is a guest post by ZetaVu

iPod ClassicNo iTunes

I have long been both an audiophile and a technophile, but until about a month ago I never owned an iPod. How is this possible? Well, contrary to popular opinion (or outright ignorance) Apple did not invent the mp3 player. The ipod is not the first player, and quite honestly it is not the best. It is however the most commercially successful, most prevalent, and in many cases the only mp3 player compatible with many other really cook gadgets.

Random History

I got curious on the subject so I looked up what was first mp3 player (flash based device). The consensus names Saehan's MPMan, (Eiger Labs in the U.S.) in 1998, followed closely by the more popular Diamond Multimedia Rio PMP300, (destined to be sued by the RIAA). This of course is after the introduction of CD and DVD players which recognized mp3 files (my first was a Riovolt SP100, leading me to burn my 1,200 CD’s and records on about 80 CD-R’s). These were followed by niche competition between the likes of Creative, iRiver, even Sony and later Sandisk. These products remained fairly niche until the newly reJobbed Apple marketing machine came along and released their first iPod in 2001, gave it their dancing silhouette and mass product placement campaign, and soon mp3 players started being called iPods (which they are not). Those interested can read more at CNET

Jump to present time and we have three major players: Apple, Sandisk and Creative (And Zune except on leap years). Apple is the clear leader from market share but not because it is the best. iPods have been plagued with issues, from easily scratched displays to exploding batteries. There are several deal breakers that kept me from considering iPods, let alone that they were made by Apple who I have philosophical issues with (but more of that later). Things like not having a replaceable battery, no external memory slot, DRM, proprietary formats, and letting iTunes take control of my music. By contrast, Apple’s biggest competitor is Sandisk, who has the advantage of being a flash manufacturer (and also doesn’t feel the need to pay for licensing the mp3 codec, but that’s another story). I personally use them as my preferred flash based player, although I admit I do have a few Creatives (running distant third) as well. Both have models with expandable memory cards (SD or microSD), models with replaceable batteries, and allow direct file manipulation rather than being locked into a control hungry program.

Now, for all my iPod bashing, I will admit that it does have one of the better interfaces (although I personally like the Sansa scrollwheel better than the iPod). When properly loaded it is faster to navigate and does offer features like lyrics and smart playlists that I think are superior, especially on the latest generation. Format conversion is much easier these days and there is a definite trend to go DRM free. I still stick to mp3 format and use the ID3 tags extensively.

Why not iTunes?

Ok, that’s enough babble about history and philosophy, now the important question. I break down and buy a new 120GB Ipod Classic to replace my aging Creative Zen Xtra and despite philosophical issues with how Apple does business (buy everything through us!) I feel no remorse for buying this particular iPod. I got it with a Windows Live Search rebate that paid me $75 to buy it (and I really love the fact that Microsoft had to pay me to buy an Apple). But now that I own an iPod, the question is how can I use it without allowing the control freak spyware and crapware loaded iTunes on my computer? ITunes is designed to sell you Apple’s products, while it offers some features that allow you to manipulate your existing collection it limits your flexibility and dictates its terms. The default settings control synchronization and set them up automatically so unless you adjust your settings just right it kicks things off the minute you plug in your iPod. It installs software without asking, changes things without permission, I gave it 5 minutes on a test machine and it was gone.

Now, I do have the option of running the iPod in Disk Mode as a portable disk drive, without proper database building I lose most of the features. One of the reasons I went with the classic (other than the 120 gb to hold my 15,000 song collection) is that it can dock into devices, like my Yamaha RXV-663 receiver (optional dock lets me control it with my tv remote and on screen display, Microsoft paid me to buy that as well ;) ) Switching to Disk Mode lets you add files via windows explorer, but doesn’t populate a music database to interface with these “smart docks”

Program Requirements

So, my stated goal, find an application or set of applications to synchronize music, video, photos, calendar, contacts, and make sure it recognizes all id3 data correctly. There are several programs and plugins that will work as partial replacements for itunes, almost all of these require Disk Mode, and all but one cannot change the ipod into disk mode without itunes. However, there are hidden functions in the ipod that can change it to Disk Mode without iTunes, http://www.command-tab.com/2006/03/30/hidden-ipod-commands/ For mine I need to hold down select and play.

Other Programs

Now there are many pretty good contenders out there, and I have tried most before settling in on my desired choices. First there was Floola. I like this because it is platform independent, freeware (but not open source), and handles audio, video, pictures and calendars. This product is designed to work with files on your ipod but does not seem to handle synchronization, so it wasn’t for me (that and it didn’t seem to like my 6th gen ipod)

The open source product I liked was Songbird . This also was multiplatform, is open source, and allows direct control of the ipod. The drawback I had with this is that it didn’t recognize my id3 tagging of my music collection (which I put great effort into) and I was not about to manually retag all my files for Songbird, so back to the drawing board.

There are other products, MediaMonkey, Foobar2000, Yamipod, and some linux only products like Amarok and Banshee. There is also a pay to use Windows Media Player plugin called Mgtek which I did not try because there were too many free alternatives. In the end I settled with Winamp, as this was the most versatile in my opinion for windows, and though its not open source, it is freeware and has a lot of custom plugins. It does not do anything with contacts or calendar, but for that I wanted to use Thunderbird.

Addressbook and Calendar from Thunderbird/Lightning

If you’re not using Thunderbird for email and address book (and you should), then this does not apply. First off you need to install the lightning plugin if you want to use calendar. (I use an icalendar file so I can sync with my PDA using Finchsync, but that’s another story) Then you need to download the MozPod plugin.  It's about a year and a half old (April 07) but otherwise works. You can set it to clear contacts before synchronizing (default) and it pretty much wipes out old data when synching new data, so you probably want to check to make sure it is done before closing Thunderbird. As a precaution I leave it disabled and turn it on when I want to update my ipod. Support for Lightning calendar is supposedly preliminary, but it does copy all my appointments, holidays, etc. and it did remind me of a friend’s birthday when the alarm popped up.

Music, Playlists, Video and Pictures

The main workhorse application is Winamp and to fully interface this with the Ipod you need the ML ipod plugin.  This adds a lot of features above the integrated iPod support, specifically better album art, smart playlists, lyrics, and photo synchronization, which I will get into a little later.

Now one thing I didn't know about the iPod classic is that it supports id3 stored lyrics, although it can be quirky about which ones it shows (different programs store lyrics differently, so not all lyrics that are stored will show up). Most people probably could care less about lyrics, and I'm not a big Karaoke fan but every once in a while I get that “what the hell did he just say” moment and like to go and look it up. That, and it adds another screen to display while playing. I have used a program called Zortam in the past to download and store lyrics in my id3 files, however lately their search engine seems useless so now I just manually add them. I know you can add lyrics in Musicmatch, but these are not recognized by Windows Media Player, and probably not by the Ipod. This plugin works pretty well in Winamp - Joseph DkE Lyrics and from what I can tell if you edit lyrics there they appear in the iPod.

ipod lyrics

Setup for iPod support is fairly simple. While the default settings are fine for music, you will need to setup specific folders and photo settings under options-preferences-iPod support. Under Audio and Video, the Folders tab lets you state where different types of videos are stored on your computer (Movies, TV Shows, etc).

Video folders

You will need to convert your video files to iPod mp4 format (I use Snapstream BeyondTV which has this feature added). Photos are taken care of under Extras-Photo Upload.

ID3 info and Album Art

I set up Winamp with my pc music library, and manually update the library whenever I add music. There are many ways to tweak and automate this, but I’ll leave that to the Winamp forums. Then I plugged in my ipod for the first time and Winamp instantly recognized it. I was able to upload my entire music database using the sync button and a little patience (about 80 gb worth). If you want to sync video with the ipod, you need to add those files to the database as well (selecting Add Media To Library automatically puts them in the Video tab). Once you have your files on the ipod, then comes the tedious part (assuming this is your first ipod), fixing your id3 files. The bulk of my collection was fine, but since every organizer stores data in the id3 differently (and there are 2 versions) not every song or album is correct. Winamp is somewhat case sensitive, meaning the album names “Let It Roll” and “Let it Roll” will appear differently but be in the same album. The ipod is anally case sensitive, so not only will these be different albums, but every time you switch from “It” and “it” and back again in a song it shows up as a new album. I’ve seen some albums split up to nine times because of this. Sadly, the only way to fix this is to scroll through the music library on the ipod itself, make notes of multiple artists (like AC DC and AC-DC) and albums, and then edit in winamp and resynchronize.

ipod sync

It also gives you a chance to make sure each album has cover art that the ipod recognizes, otherwise you can download and embed new art. Winamp has a cover art downloaded, but I typically prefer Musicmatch or Album Cover Art Downloader http://www.unrealvoodoo.org/hiteck/projects/albumart/

Smart Playlists

In addition to the music library, and the embedded views of artist, album, and Genre, both Winamp and the iPod let you make playlists, and in particular Smart Playlists (or Smart Views in the Winamp music library). smart playlist

These playlists will use operators to select the songs in the playlist, usually from ID3 data but you can also include info such as Played Last or Track Gain. There are two ways to make Smart Playlists. They can be generated on the iPod itself in Winamp, or you can make and generate a Smart View in your music library and synchronize it. I generate sets based on the year of the song (Year=1990) and decade (Year>1989 and <2000) or specific keywords I place in the comments tag (Comments contains “mellow”).

 smart playlist options

You can put multiple words in the comments tag and use “contains” in the smart tag so that the song shows up in multiple smart playlists. Now even if I switch to other programs or add songs, I can use the id3 settings to organize playlists the way I want. Another feature is the ratings, which you can apply on the fly in the ipod. Setting a playlist to read ratings (ratings=*****) will automatically add that song to that smart playlist, and when you synchronize your iPod, ratings can be synchronized as well.

Photo Support

Lastly, the ml_pod plugin lets you synchronize pictures between your computer and iPod. Now this feature still needs some work, and is in some ways better and some ways worse than iTunes. ITunes lets you choose a photo directory, and all folders in that directory become folders on the iPod. All subfolders however get added into those folders. If you want to exclude some pictures you need to keep them out of that directory. I believe it does however let you update some pictures without making you load the entire database again.

photo support

Ml_pod handles folders more intelligently. It lets you choose if subfolders get merged into folders or if they are separate. Also you can add flags, make a file in folders called "skip.flag" to skip that folder and subfolder, or if you want to include a subfolder of a skipped folder put a file called "include.flag" in it. It also lets you rotate portrait pictures to maximize size. The one negative is that it writes the database every time you sync, meaning large collections take a really long time as it converts each picture for the ipod. As a result, I probably will update pictures once a quarter. Itunes will also let you sync with photoshop elements if you tag pictures there, which ml_pod does not do.

Finishing Thoughts

Finally there is support for podcasts, audio books, LastFM, a lot of features I currently don’t mess around with now but will play with, specifically as the plugin is developed. There are other tweaks such as reorganizing playlist order, gamma corrections for photos, or transcoding incompatible music files. Best is to read the wiki at http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page . There are still a few limitations, you have to buy your music separately (obviously) and there is no support for game downloads etc. For those you will still need iTunes, at least for now. Of course you have the option of replacing the iPod firmware with the likes of ipodlinux or Rockbox, but that also takes away the compatibility with cool devices like my Yamaha dock. The choice of games for non-touch iPods is rather limited so no big deal for now. Anyway, hopefully this helps others in a similar boat as me. I am not trying to make a plug for the ipod, while it is pretty cool once you properly de-Apple it, I am hoping the competition (Sandisk, Creative, etc) make more inroads and can force a universal compatibility in docking devices.

Many thanks to ZetaVu for sharing his experience with MP3 Players.  This was the second, hopefully of many guest posts on GeekTonic.  ZetaVu is a frequent commenter at GeekTonic with a great deal of knowledge with HTPC's and other media gadgets.  I've gotten to know him from the many hours spent on the Snapstream, MediaPortal , AVS and other Forums where you'll often find him (under the same online name).

Boxee Working on iPhone - iPod Touch Remote App

An iPhone and iPod Touch Remote Control application has been requested several times on the Boxee Forums and based on a twitter post by a boxee rep, it looks like boxee is actually working on their own iPhone/iPod Touch app that does just that.

boxeeiphoneremote

Boxee, a popular HTPC project based on XBMC is reportedly testing the iPhone remote app internally and are waiting for Apple to approve the app for the iPhone app store.  According to the “tweets” the first version of the Boxee/iPhone app will be a simple remote – so probably will not include playback functions within the iPhone at first.

If you can’t wait for the official app, there already is an iPhone web interface you can use with boxee.  Just be sure your web interface server option is turned on, under settings -> network –> servers.  Then point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) to http://appletv.local:8888/iphone/.  It’s a simple web-based interface and is fairly limited – similar to the offering for XBMC (can’t access any of the native Boxee content such as social feeds, integrated content such as hulu, revision 3, or rss feeds, ect.), but it does list the content and provides play controls to launch the media in Boxee.

Apple Day - The iPod Touch I Want to See

We'll see lots of buzz on the web with the Apple "event" today.  Rumors of new, redesigned iPods and possible updates to iTunes (I think this one is less likely) have been swirling across the internet the past week or so.  I usually don't join in until the announcement is made, but this time I'm actually looking forward to one of the possibilities from this one.

When Apple has their announcement today, one of their expected announcements is the rumored, redesigned (slightly), iPod Touch.  I'm most interested in a new iPod Touch as I love the one I bought for my daughter and really want one for myself instead of an iPhone (the Blackberry Curve is the perfect phone for me thank you very much).

Here's my guess on the iPod Touch Redesign:
  • Cheaper Price & More Memory (currently $299 for 8GB in US)
  • Will match the new, 3G iPhone in Appearance and Thickness
  • The new Firmware Upgrade Included in the price
Here's some other features I'd like to see on the iPod Touch that I doubt we'll see:
  • Camera Built In???  This is a long-shot (read very unlikely) guess, but I'd like to see it
  • GPS built In (man I hope this happens - but don't hold your breath)
  • Radio (yeah I know it'll never happen cause it's not Apple's way)
What's your guess for today's announcement?  Let me know in the comments

Dr. Horrible Lives On – Get it on iTunes

Dr. HorribleAfter ignoring the talk about this Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog over the past week I finally checked it out online Saturday and Sunday.  I had very low expectations but was intrigued because of the involvement by Joss Whedon (of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) as well as Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Nathan Fillion (Starred in Firefly).  I’m a fan of each of those people so since it was free I though why not?  While it’s not free any longer it is now available on iTunes and later on DVD.  Here’s my thoughts on the show for those of you who are fans or haven’t seen it yet:
What is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
It isn’t really a blog, but it is a very popular online “Television” web series.  It debuted last Tuesday and over the past weekend its popularity grew and was a success in viewership.  Wheden put the series up on www.drhorrible.com over the weekend in a three-part web series.  The series is actually a comedy/musical starring Neil Patrick Harris as the super villain & Nathan Fillion as his arch-nemesis.
Below I’ve added the Trailer to give you a better feel for the Dr. Horrible’s series

Teaser from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog on Vimeo.
Very Popular – Not YouTube…
According to an interview on The Star.com they had to upgrade their server to handle the increase in traffic.
My Impression (and Wife and Daughters also)
I started watching the first episode and at first was underwhelmed.  It’s a musical which is not my typical genre and it’s heavy on the cheese (as in cheesy) for sure.  But after a minute or so I realized this was a fun take on the villain story and really pretty good quality.  I knew my wife and daughter were big fans of Firefly so I told them to check it out.  They both watched separately on their laptops and both loved it.  Laughing happened often and they didn’t miss the 3rd episode which was up Sunday morning and back down at the end of Sunday.
Did You Miss the free version?  Where Can You See Dr. Horrible Now?
While this web series was an experiment with a free preview this past week, you can still see it today on iTunes for $1.99 per episode or $3.99 for the series (and any additional they might add).  As Whedon puts it “We have big dreams, people, and one of them is paying our crew.”  The episodes will eventually be available on DVD as well along with some extra features.

AllofMP3 for Movies: ZML

zml2

You may have heard of the extremely popular, but thorn-in-the-side for the music industry - AllofMP3.com?  Well after selling non-DRM'd mp3's to the masses for dirt cheap (they didn't pay royalties for the music so were pretty much illegal) and eventually getting shut down the Russians are back at it again, this time selling movies online for $1.99.

After AllofMP3 site was finally shut down it was re-branded & re-launched as MP3Fiesta and continues to sell music online today.  And now MP3Fiesta has launched a new movie download service they are calling ZML that will most definitely be on Hollywood's hit list.

If you read their terms of service, you'll see that they built in a sneaky little terms of service that tries to say they are following the Russian Organization for multimedia and Digital Systems (ROMS) rules (although ROMS won't recognize the organization if this goes like it did with AllofMP3).  The TOS also say this:

"You can't buy movies on the site if it violates the laws of your country."

Yes this statement is pretty silly and no it doesn't mean you can legally purchase movies from ZML.com, but they'll sell a ton of movies here until they get shut down anyway.

The site sells thousands of hit movies and the downloads are compatible with all the major devices including iPod's Zunes and DivX players.  Here's a screen-shot of the site:

zml

While I think this would be the perfect model (DRM-free and usable in all devices) for other Movie Download sites, I should probably mention that I don't think downloading movies from this site is a good idea.  It looks like it's illegal and unethical as well.

iPod Hack: Put New iPod Firmware on Old Video iPod

Have an older model iPod video?  Jealous of those new iPod owners with the new, slick looking user interface including the split-screen, redesigned now-playing, mini-now-playing on every screen and more.  Some hackers over at ipodwizard have created a way to put the new iPod firmware onto those older iPod Video's.

ipod

As always, remember that this is a hack and there is some risk of things not going according to plan involved here, but there have been several reports on the forum thread saying the hack was working so it sounds like it's worth trying if you have an older iPod and want to resist buying a newer one.

Make Your Own DVD Box Sets With Your HTPC

Here's a great idea for those of you lucky enough to own a Home Theater PC:  Make your own DVD Box Set of TV shows or movies for that matter.

Why make your own sets?  Zack outlines two great reasons and I've added the last two :)

1. Cost

2. Don't have to wait for them to be released to DVD

3. You can watch them anywhere - even away from your home (of course if you have a Personal Media Player like the iPod or Zune, you can automatically load those shows up on those devices too.)

4. You can draw your own palm trees (nice Zack) and DVD art to give it that personal touch.

DVDs

Zack over at the Snapstream Blog walks through one of the nice features of BeyondTV recently added.  A DVD Burning Plugin has been available on the last few versions of Beyond TV and you can purchase this plugin for any of your Beyond TV or BeyondTV Link boxes.  The plugin gives you the ability to select a show or series of shows to burn to a disk, then click go all from your remote.  Once it's done compressing (if needed) and burning your new DVD, you can take that DVD to view anywhere there is a DVD player.

Zack's post goes through all of the steps to making your own DVD sets with screen-shots of the process and lots of detail.  You can do this with almost any of the Home Theater PC's, but Beyond TV has the advantage of the DVD Burner being "built-in" to the core software making the process seamless with no tweaking required.

Music Industry Collapse Part 2 - Madonna

MadonnaLondon The Wall Street Journal is reporting that pop diva Madonna is close to leaving her record company contract (after one more album due to Warner Music) for a $120 million deal with concert-promotion giant Live Nation Inc.

The 10-year contract with Live Nation, gives Madonna money & stock for the rights to sell 3 albums, promote concert tours, sell merchandise and license her name.  This would be yet another major chunk of armor removed from the formerly formidable music industry.  As I mentioned earlier this week, the middleman is quickly being removed from the equation.  Other examples of major music artists going it alone without a record contract include Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Jamiroquai and the Charlatans.

CBS Outlines Their Plans For Season 2 of Jericho TV Show

One of the most searched for phrases at this blog is "When will Jericho Season 2 Start?"  And I decided to at least give as much detail to that answer as I can.  So far, there isn't a solid startJERICHO date other than to say that it is a Mid-Season replacement and its premier date depends on other CBS shows success.

Now that the seven-episode season of Jericho has finished taping and production, Kelly Kahl, the CBS head of scheduling is saying the show could replace "Kid Nation," "Moonlight," "Cane," or the yet-to-premier "Viva Laughlin" if any of those new shows falter in the ratings.  If (when) one of those shows gets dropped, Jericho would likely take their place this Fall - possibly as soon as November 2007.  If not, then the season 2 premier would likely begin in January 2008.

Carol Barbee, the executive producer of Jericho also addressed how they will deal with the storyline with the uncertainty of a Season 3.  The producers filmed two different version of the final, season 2 episode.  One of the version wrap up all the storyline's questions in case the show isn't renewed, and the other version leaves some cliffhangers for hopefully a continuation to a third season.

TV Week also discusses the shows fans sending tons of nuts to CBS to protest the shows cancellation.  The article also mentioned something I didn't realize until now about how the Jericho producers met with Sci Fi Channel personnel who expressed picking up the series as a potential companion for Battlestar Galactica.  I think this is a bit of good news and possibly brings further hope if CBS hesitates to continue the Jericho series on to Season 3.

The Music Industry Hasn't Died, It's Just Eliminating the Middle Man

radiohead_bigThe TimesOnline had an article in the Sunday Times titled "The Day The Music Industry Died" that along with several  similar articles has hit the Internet by storm.  The article proclaims that the music industry is practically finished based on major bands Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails making drastic moves to "go-it-alone" from the music labels.  These two bands will now control their own destiny and really their own business.  These bands really are the beginning of the new music industry!

TOMORROW RADIOHEAD WILL SELL THEIR OWN MUSIC AND LET FANS NAME THEIR PRICE

What's the big deal?  Well the popular band Radiohead let their "record" contract expire and is letting the fans decide how much they want to pay the band for their music.  Beginning tomorrow, you can download their songs right from Radiohead's website

RadioHead

and name your price for the songs.  Here's a screen-shot from their website:

RadioHead2

No Record company to do the marketing, packaging, or contract with Apple or Amazon, RIAA or DRM wrapper - just the music.

MORE MUSIC ARTISTS MAKING SIMILAR MOVES AWAY FROM MUSIC LABELS

If you think this is just a one-band stunt, lets discuss the latest music artists making similar moves away from the old music industry guard:

9inch Nine Inch Nails.  Just yesterday, Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails put this up on their site:

Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
Exciting times, indeed.

Both Oasis and Jamiroquai, two other very popular bands currently without a record contract are rumored to be considering moves similar to Radiohead's.

TheCharlatans The Charlatans are giving away free downloads of their new album and single if you visit the radio station of XFM.

Prince gave away CD's of his new album with every delivery of The Mail on Sunday newspaper in the UK earlier this year.

It's only a matter of time (not much time) before every music artist realizes how irrelevant the current music industry has become.  Once famous, music artists don't need a contract.  Instead, they can make their own deals with Apple and Amazon.  They can sell their music on their own sites or even give away music as loss leaders for concerts, fan paraphernalia, extras etc.

What about new artists trying to break through and be discovered?  They don't need a major music company contract.  They need Internet exposure and once they get traction they'll be on their way to selling music and concerts.  It will likely make the biggest bands have to work a little harder to stay on top because they will earn what they keep.  But it will also make it a little easier for a newer up-and-coming artist to break through and be noticed.  I dare say it might even improve the talent pool and hopefully the music that plays on the radio and television.

It's difficult to mention the major earthquake in the music industry going on right now without noticing the RIAA's misguided legal escapades.  The RIAA has been going on a lawsuit spree to sue individuals for damages.  In doing so, they have put the worst possible face on the music industry and instead of discouraging music sharing, instead created a disdain for the very industry they sought to protect.  Now, the music industry will discover they are fighting for their livelihood to even keep the artists they supposedly were trying to protect and whom they were profiting from to stay in long-term music contracts that all of the sudden don't look so attractive to the music makers any more.

Beyond TV 4.7 Released

btv1

Snapstream officially released the latest version of their flagship Home Theater PC software, Beyond TV today - now out of beta.

There are several improvements and some very nice feature upgrades in this version.  Here's a list of some of the bigger ones:

  1. Faster HDHomeRun Tuner - QAM tuning with Beyond TV and the HDHomeRun is now much faster. Before there was a delay when you first started a QAM channel. Now with a setting change in the BTV webadmin, starting liveTV and changing channels for QAM channels are significantly improved.
  2. Enhanced Line-up and change detection/correction.  Ability to edit a custom TV lineup.
  3. Auto Load Shows to iTunes - As Snapstream mentioned on their blog, this might help out those people who were relying on iTunes to get their NBC programming (no longer available on iTunes) You can now showSqueeze to h.264 (this is for all of those Apple iPods and other Apple devices) including a podcast rss feed for iTunes. From the release notes "For you non-apple fanbois, we've also included a 1280x720p h.264 profile that you can send your hd content to and save a ton of space whilst still looking good." Note this is a paid plugin packaged with the DVD Burning plugin (if you already have the DVD burning plugin, you'll get this feature also). btvitunes2
  4. Transcoding Support for iPod and PSP format.
  5. Pool multiple Hard Drives as one - Snapstream calls this feature "drive pooling: Pool several hard drives as one so Say Beyond TV can manage and distribute recordings between each of the drives. It's simple and you can set it and forget it.
  6. Beyond TV Link DVD Burning - you can now burn DVD's right from the 10-foot BTV interface on your extender (Link) manchine. This feature has been available for the BTV server machine but until now you couldn't add this plugin on the BTV/extender machine. Note: This will be a fee-based plugin)
  7. iPhone or Smartphone Remote Control your BeyondTV - Snapstream is calling this feature the firefly nano (named after their firefly HTPC remote). I have more detail on the Firefly nano feature in this post.
  8. Automatic Community Recordings. In other words, it will take the top shows from other Beyond TV users (Beyond TV Buzz) and will then schedule them at the lowest priority on your BTV machine.  You can customize which of these "community" recordings actually record and how many of the top recordings you really want to add each day.
  9. Multiple usb-uirt support - use and manage multiple USB-UIRT's with one Beyond TV machine.
  10. Xbox 360 Streaming fix: Showsqueezed wmv files can now be set as type "video" for your 360 to be able to stream them. This setting is in the Web Admin under advanced settings -> Miscellaneous Settings.
  11. You can now set "record at this timeslot" to set up a show to record only at a certain time slot.
  12. Enhanced Performance of the BTV User Interface (Viewscape) including but not limited to faster switching from screen-to-screen, faster program guide, faster input of almost all of the pages in BTV.
  13. While a recording is in process, you can extend the recording in progress by "xx" minutes.
  14. Web Admin Upgrades:  There's a host of upgrades to the online, BeyondTV web admin including:
    1. RSS Feeds - get RSS feeds of upcoming recordings, recent recordings, disk space remaining and recent showsqueezed (compressed) recordings.  These feeds can include the hyperlink to open up a show or the hyperlink can be turned off.- (merged from the "community web admin")
    2. Added a Web User Interface Scheduling Calendar - (merged from the "community web admin") btvCalendar1
    3. Faster start-up and performance for webadmin pages
    4. Addition of Ajax on some of the WebAdmin pages - (merged from the "community web admin")
  15. Added log messages to the BTV Link (extender) machines
  16. Ability to showsqueeze & create smartchapters en masse (batch mode).
  17. Support for AverMedia A180 ATSC Card
  18. MPEG-4 Playback / Transcode support
  19. Support for showsqueeze (compression) from DVR-MS files

btv

There are more improvements included as well, but those are the bigger ones. This is a fairly significant release so anyone with Beyond TV will want to upgrade.

There's no integration of Beyond Media (DVD, Music, etc) features with this one, but here's hoping it is released with the 5.0 version that must be coming before too awful long.

Head over to Snapstream to download and get started with the new Beyond TV 4.7

Amazon Begins War with iTunes with Strong Start

2amazon Do you own a portable media player?  Possibly an iPod, Zune, Zen or whatever MP3 player?  This week Amazon came out of the gates running with a very strong start in the digital tunes store war that pits Amazon vs. iTunes.

Amazon announced their AmazonMP3 beta Tuesday morning and proudly called it the “the world’s biggest selection of a la carte DRM-free MP3 music downloads.”

Why is this significant?  Amazon's store has popular songs that work anywhere in any MP3 playing device.  There's no DRM which means you won't have to worry whether it will work in your device and you won't have to worry about the song "expiring" when the company goes away like is happening with Sony, Virgin Digital and potentially Yahoo Music.  The library includes over 2 million tunes with all of them in a DRM-less, 256 kilobits-per-second MP3 format.  The songs will range in cost from 89 cents to 99 cents per track with the top 100 albums costing 8.99 each.  While you can copy the songs from device to device, Amazon will not replace for free any purchased tunes - you'll have to buy new ones if you lose the ones your purchased because of a drive failure or anything like that.

To download you can either do a simple download with no browser add-on app or you can download their free app (Windows & Mac with Linux coming soon.)  I tried out the downloader by downloading a free tune (everyone gets a free copy of Energy by the Apples in Stereo).  The app is just an addon to your web browser.  Once installed you simply click on "buy mp3 song" and it automatically downloads and adds the song to iTunes for you.  Yes you read right, it adds it to iTunes so for you folks who are used to the iTunes interface there is absolutely zero learning curve.

Is AmazonMP3 an iTunes "killer?"  No, not today but it is a very viable competitor with Apple's iTunes which should be very successful and popular as the music collection increases.  Amazon is in this game to win and they know their competition - just look at the image on the front page of the AmazonMP3 site.  It's a cascade of mp3 players with the iPod being front and center.

I'll be checking with AmazonMp3 first next time I am looking for a tune.

More Free Downloads for Network TV Shows

nbc As mentioned before, some of the Networks are releasing a few TV Premier Pilots for download.  There are also rumors that some networks leaked many premiers out on torrents earlier this Summer to create buzz.

To add to that, NBC is now offering free downloads of their popular shows via a new service they call NBC Direct.  Shows such as The Office, 30 Rock, and Heroes will be available to download to your desktop using the NBC Direct software.  The initial beta launch will provide users with a free subscription option allowing the viewer to pre-select their NBC shows and then those shows will auto-download to their computer once available (after the broadcast).  DRM will be included on the downloads so the software will allow users to view each episode for up to one week before the shows "expire".  Unfortunately there will be advertising included, but hey - it's certainly a step in the right direction.  I'm beginning to think NBC understands their TV world is shifting towards the internet and toward TV watching flexibility due to Tivo's DVR's and Home Theater PC's.

UPDATE:  Digital Alchemy reports this very useful addition to the story:

"However, if you're impatient for legal TV downloads and you have an Intel Centrino or Viiv-based PC, you can get VIP access to NBC show downloads right now."

Here's a list of the shows that will be available for download from the new NBC Direct Service

NBC Direct Shows - will be in beta testing beginning in October:

Heroes

The Office

Life

Bionic Woman

30 Rock

Friday Night Lights

Late Night with Conan O'Brien

The Bionic Woman - the first, pilot episode is available for free download now at Amazon Unbox

Chuck - the first, pilot episode is available for free download now at Amazon Unbox

Life - the first, pilot episode is available for free download now at Amazon Unbox

How to Find Songs From Commercials, Movies and TV Shows

UPDATE:  THIS ARTICLE WAS SUBMITTED TO DIGG:  PLEASE DIGG IT IF YOU ENJOYED THE POST

musicnote This past weekend my wife and I were watching football and during commercial break saw the most recent iPod Nano ad.  My wife loved the song they played and asked me the name of the song.  I of course didn't know and just let it go.  Well today, TVSquad had an article about that very song ("1234" by Feist) and reminded me to buy it for my wife.  I love the internet and how it never leaves you wondering....

Anyway, this got me thinking.  Advertisers and television producers often find great songs - some old classics and some new lesser-known ones, but many of them ones you might want to add to your music collection.  I've done some searching around and found the following resources for finding songs from commercials so you'll always know the name of that song you either want to get - or the name of the song you hate and can't get out of your head.  Either way, the information is here for you.

Commercials, Trailers & Soundtracks

adtunesAdTunes - an ad music blog that serves as a guide to music used in television commercials, film trailers, soundtracks and more.  This is an excellent resource with links to iTunes downloads as well.

TV Shows & Movies

TV Show Music - an excellent database of music from television shows.  Pick your show and find music played during episodes or advertisements of that show.

TV Show Songs - another database for music in television shows - includes a forum section.

Tune Find - a database of music in movies and television shows with a search feature

Internet Movie Database (IMBD) - The best database for movies and TV shows bar none.  This site isn't specifically for music by any means, but its a great place to find songs played in TV shows or movies.

400 Great Songs in Movies - The flimsite.org site has a listing of the 400 films and songs nominated for the American Film Institute awards

Commercials

Songs from iPod Commercials - MacSupport

What's That Called Database with links to Amazon & iTunes to purchase

Squidoo TV Commercial Music - Another resource for Movies and television music.  This one gives you the YouTube video of the commercial (yeah you can watch it again :))

The UK Television Advert Music Database - Don't want to leave out you guys across the pond.  A great television advertisement music database for finding songs.

As Seen on TV - An about.com guide on oldies songs used in new TV commercials.  Also includes info on whether the song used is an original version or a remix.

Commercials.tuneforums.com - A forum for discussion of TV commercial music - good way of asking "what is that song..."

Oh, and if you want to see the video of that "1234" song by Feist.  Here's the video on YouTube.  The music is kind of catchy, but the video kind of isn't.  I think the iPod Nano commercial is better to watch...

That should be enough to get you started.  Now you should never be left wondering: what was that song....?

BusinessCard iPod Stand

Want a quick, very cheap and easy stand for your iPod, iPhone, PMP etc? Just use a standard business card. I know, it sounds kind of cheesy, but it really works to hold your iPod at the right angle for video viewing. Plus it folds flat to carry in your wallet.

Here's the business card with the lines drawn for the cuts
