Easily Add Major League Baseball Team Schedule to Your Calendar

bb

Its time for Baseball with the first signs of summer peeking through.  Monday marks the beginning of baseball for most Major League baseball teams.  Keep up with you favorite team by importing the baseball schedule into your calendar program.

1

With the help of MarkThisDate.com, you can import your team's schedule into Outlook, iCal, Google Calendar, Lotus Notes and even a PDF or Excel Document among others.  And if you think you team isn't popular enough to be included think again - even my beloved, but beleaguered Kansas City Royals are included!

Here's how to import the schedule of your favorite baseball team:

1. Start up a web browser and head to MarkThisDate.com

2. You can browse to the "sport" category or do as i did and use the search bar and type in your baseball teams name.

 3

3. Click on the hyperlink of your teams name

4

4. Make sure the dates are for the most current season.

5

5. When you're ready to add the schedule to your calendar, click on the "add to calendar" button

6

6. Select your time-zone from the drop-down list (they have them all)

7

7. Pick the calendar application that you want to import into your schedule into - in this case I selected Outlook 2007.  Depending on your calendar application your next steps will vary

8

    • For Outlook 2007, a window will open up.  Click ok and then you'll see a window asking for you to confirm whether you really want to add the schedule to your calendar.9

11 Outlook 2007

    • For Google Calendar, the Google Calendar will open and you'll see these button selections10 gcal

  1. You'll now see the schedule added to your calendar application.

That's all there is to it.  You now have your teams schedule with times and location on your calendar!  I can't resist - Play Ball!

Wii Twilight Hack Detailed for Homebrew and Emulators

If you've been following the Nintendo Wii news you might already know that some inventive folks have come up with a way to allow homebrew games as well as emulators on the Nintendo Wii using a copy of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game.

The Twilight hack isn't the easiest thing to do and I haven't tried it myself, but here's a video of a guy running a homebrew version of Tetris on his system after "installing" the Twilight Hack.

Pretty nifty - especially when you realize this opens up the Wii world to free emulator games and probably more.  Here's what has been released via the Hack so far:

There's a tutorial on getting the Wii homebrew working, but I probably won't be trying this.  It's a little too much work for me and I don't want to take the chance of breaking my Wii (that sounds bad now that I see it in words).

NINTENDO UPDATES TO 3.2 MENU - IT DOESN'T BREAK THE TWILIGHT HACK

Here's what my Wii screen said as I was doing the update last night:

Dear Customer,
Nintendo would like to inform you that a Wii Menu update is now available. Select the Update button on the right to update your Wii Console.
From this version of the Wii Menu onwards, Wii System Update will be displayed in the Disc Channel when you insert a Wii Disc that contains an update for the Wii Menu or for a Channel on the Wii Menu.
If the update contained on the Disc is not necessary for your Wii console, the Disc Channel will be displayed normally.
Note: if you have already updated your Wii console since 26 February 2008, you do not need to update again.
Nintendo

There was speculation that this updated would break the hack, but there has been multiple confirmations that it does not.  Looks like the update is to allow you to check Wi-Fi rankings of other people with Wii's - such as for the upcoming Mario Kart game.

Super Bowl Party Disaster - Lost TV Feed

tv When I host a Super Bowl party the things I usually worry about is having enough food, making sure my TV and audio are in working condition and there is enough seating.  What else could go wrong???

Picture this.  You have a group of people coming over to watch the most watched game of the year - the Super Bowl game on your home theater, projection screen system.  Everything is going well, the pre-game is on in the background as people are arriving and all of the sudden the channel goes black.  No picture, no sound nothing.  You frantically check all the other channels and they are all fine.  After almost an hour a message finally appears on the screen telling you they are experiencing technical difficulties.....

That's pretty much as close to a Super Bowl party disaster as you can get and it really happened to thousands of viewers in Northwest Arkansas and Southeastern Oklahoma Dish and DirecTV subscribers due to a software glitch at a local Arkansas TV Station KFTA

kfta

My Dad called me from his home to ask me if I was having problems in KC (which I wasn't.)  DirecTV put up a message for subscribers to turn to an alternative channel where they were broadcasting the channel from an alternate "local channel" for the game, but Dish Network subscribers like my Dad were out of luck.

The outage lasted until just before the end of the third quarter.  For those that waited that long, they did get to see the most exciting quarter of the game (the fourth of course), but there will be a LOT of unhappy people around those parts.  And Arkansas people weren't alone, looks like Nevada had some problems as well.

The local Arkansas channel had a blip about the outage in this story

College Football Bowl Guide

Its getting difficult to find any new television programming on your TV sets these days thanks to the writers strike, but starting today the College Football Bowl season officially begins with the San Diego Co. Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on ESPN and runs through January 8th for the BCS Championship in New Orleans.  If you're a sports fan, check out my ultimate guide to the College Football Bowl Games.  It includes a complete listing of all of the games, times, locations and teams as well as a Google Maps Mashup showing the locations of each of the bowl games.

Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Still a Problem?

ring of death

I was at the UPS store shipping a few packages and realized there were two different people (unrelated) in the store with XBox360's on their way to be repaired.  I asked them about it and they both said their XBox360 quit working and they were experiencing the "Red Ring of Death."  Then the UPS guy behind the desk said there had already been four others today shipping their 360's with the same problem.

This surprised me because I thought Microsoft had worked out those issues.  For those of you who haven't heard of the Red Ring of Death, you can read this wiki article.  It says the red lights on the indicator "ring" represent "general hardware failure" and is known by gamers as the infamous "Red Ring of Death."

Anyone else seen this problem on their XBox 360?  Is it only with the older units?

THE BCS BOWLS:

The top five bowl games are the BCS bowl games play played the first week of January:

Rose Bowl - Big Ten conference champion vs. Pac 10 conference champion

Sugar Bowl - SEC conference champion vs. At Large Team

Fiesta Bowl - Big 12 conference champion vs. At Large Team

Orange Bowl - ACC conference champion vs. At Large Team

The BCS National Championship Game - pits the top 2 teams in the BCS rankings

Beyond the top two teams, the other eight teams come from a pool of league champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Southeastern Conference and Pac-10, plus four at-large selections. The at-large teams must have nine wins and be ranked no lower than No. 14 in the final BCS standings.

No more than two teams from the same conference can make a BCS bowl, and if the No. 3 BCS team is a member of an automatic qualifying conference but didn’t win its conference, it must be chosen for a BCS bowl.

If the No. 1 team in the BCS title game is the champion of its conference, then that conference’s BCS bowl partner chooses first from the at-large pool, followed by the BCS bowl associated with the conference of the No. 2 team in the title game. The selection order for the rest of the bowls goes Orange, Fiesta and Sugar.

HOW DOES BCS FORMULA WORK?

The BCS formula has 3 rankings added together and averaged: the Harris Poll & USA Today coaches poll and the computer rankings.  The computer rankings (six separate rankings withthe best and worst of those computer rankings being dropped from the calculation) do not consider the margin of victory and in most cases where the games are played.

Weekend Fun: Play Scrabble On the Web or on Facebook

ScrabbleBlogAre you a Scrabble™ Word Game Fan?  Can't find a partner to play Scrabble™ against?  Look no further than an online game of Scrabulous where you can get your Scrabble™ Fix online.

Scrabulous doesn't seem to have the blessing (read license) of Hasbro or Mattel so I'm not sure how the trademark owners might feel about the Scrabulous application, but for now it's a great, free website to play your favorite Scrabble™ game when you don't have a willing partner to play against.  At Scrabulous, you can play against the computer or find others to play against in the member rooms (requires registration).  They also offer a "play via e-mail" version, a Solitaire Scrabble™ version and a faster game of Blitz Scrabulous.

There is an online version that was pulling in a few thousand users - less than the developers had hoped so how did they increase exposure?  They ported Scrabulous to Facebook.  Scrabulous has now grown to approximately 950,000 players!

The screen-shot below is of the standard version of Scrabulous.  In this version you play against others across the net.

 scrabulous1

This is a single-player version of Scrabulous.  It wasn't as much fun as the standard multi-player version, but if you're just wanting to hone your word skills its not a bad game either.

 scrabulous2

Scrabulous also has a dictionary page that allows you to cheat or confirm words you might want to use while playing Scrabble.

scrabulous3 Dictionary

Another place for some online Scrabble™ is yahoo's Literati.  Literati is an officially licensed version, but involves a download.  Literati has a free trial download, but for the full version you'll have to fork over $20.

For the Internet (non-facebook) version CLICK HERE

Enjoy your game of Scrabble

Weekend Project: Find Worthy Nintendo Wii Games

wii This past Summer I scoured the internet for ways to find a Wii Console.  They were never available in my city when I looked for them.  In the end, I found them using a little trick I discovered using a back door website for Gamestop - I'll get to that later.  Anyway, here I am many months later with zero games purchased.  That's right, all I have for games are the standard Wii Sports that comes with the console.  Your mission this weekend and early next week is to help me find the best and most worthy Wii games you think I should purchase.

Yes Wii Sports is an excellent package of games that we actually still enjoy.  Regardless, I desperately need to justify my Wii purchase and to do that I need some good games that make use of the motion sensing Wiimotes.

WII GAMES ON MY PURCHASE LIST

Here's my initial list.  I haven't tried any of them so I'm looking for your advice if you have any experience with them.  Also, please give me some recommendations in the comments below of games you'd add to the list.

Help!  My list is too short and I need some advice.  If you have any recommendations - or games I should stay away from let me know.

HOW TO FIND A WII IN STOCK IN YOUR AREA

Back to that backdoor site for finding a Wii console at Gamestop.  I'm guessing most of you are finding Wii Consoles easier now, but if not here's how I found mine:

1. Enter the following hyperlink into your web browser - LINK

2. You should see a page like this one (screen-shot of my area)

wii

You can see that even today, there are none in stock at Gamestops near me.  (it often does say more on the way so don't get too excited about that)

3. Now in your browser link, change the zip=64158 to your local zip code and hit ENTER

4. It should bring up a list of all the stores in your area ranked by closest to that zip code.  The second column will show if that store has any units in stock.

5. If you really want one and it shows a unit in stock.  Call the store - don't wait as they sell fast.  If they say there is one in stock head over there now - as I said the sell fast so go get one if you want one.

There you have it.  A call for some help from my readers on recommended Wii Games and a tip from me on how to find a Wii Console.  Happy Gaming and Have a Great Weekend!

First up is the College Football Recruiting Map which showcases college football recruits by town and University.  Select a State, University or College Football Conference by using the selectors in the bottom left panel. Blue dots represent the players towns (hometown, prep school town, or community college town), while red dots represent the Universities selected. You can switch between towns and universities using the button selector in the top right panel. If you would like to view players within a 100 mile radius, enter the desired zip code in the zip code box in the bottom left panel.

This is an example using my personal favorite, the Missouri Tigers.  The map flags all cities from which 2007 Missouri Tigers College Football Recruits hometowns are located.

Get a Free Cushion Remote Jacket for Your Wii Remote

Do You own a Nintendo Wii Game Machine?  Nintendo is giving away free Wii Remote Jackets for anyone who owns a wii remote.  Why you might ask?  Well I'm thinking it has something to do with lawyers worrying about people being still not attaching the wrist strap to their arm and not holding the remote securely in their hand and then having it slip out of hand into tv, friend dog etc. and then causing a lawsuit.  Silly?  Yes.  Still, I'll be ordering one for each remote I own just because.... well because it's free and hey, my WiiMote probably needs a jacket for the winter.

Photo Slider Game for Flickr

Just last week I highlighted a bunch of great games using flickr, a photo sharing site.  Well today I bring you another neat flickr game - this one is a photo slider game.  The game created by noviKorisnik is simple yet fun and works by taking any photo on flickr and then scrambling the photo into multiple puzzle pieces (# of pieces depends on the dimensions of the photo.)  An extra box is left blank and you "slide" the pieces around to unscramble the photo.

flickrClickAndSlideGame

Here's what you need to install the game:

Now that the greasemonkey script is installed, head over to any photo page on flickr and at the top right of the photo you should see %puzzle.  Click on %puzzle and the game will begin.  To stop the game, use your mouse to click anywhere outside the game area of the puzzle.

Here's a screencast video demo of the game in action:
