Sage On the Go-Sagetv gets iPad-iPhone-and iPod Touch Streaming

Owners of the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch have a new option for watching TV on the go – SageTV Mobile Web Interface now has iOS streaming of recorded TV shows.  SageTV is a pretty powerful Home Theater PC program.  It’s multi-OS including all Windows Versions, Windows Home Server, Linux and for version 6 it even does Mac.  Add to that SageTV is the only HTPC solution with an integrated extender that can do pretty much everything a computer can do.  But there are two things that are holding SageTV back from being the perfect HTPC solution.  One is the lack of CableCard – something many SageTV users currently deal with using a Hauppauge HD-PVR to tune all of those encrypted Cable & Satellite channels.  The other thing missing is the lack of mobile placeshifting – until now.
iOS Streaming on SageTV Mobile
Thanks to the work of third-party SageTV developer, Jason, SageTV users get the beginnings of a mobile placeshifting solution to watch TV on your iOS device.  I’ve had the honor of testing the new version of the 3rd party add-on, SageTV Mobile Web Interface which pushes the web interface to your mobile device and it’s pretty nice.  Sage Mobile Web Interface has been around for a long time.  It’s basically a mobile version of the SageTV Web Interface.  What’s new is very significant to those of us with an Apple mobile device like an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.  The latest version of SageTV Mobile adds the ability to stream TV recordings to your iOS device.  I’ve been testing this new feature for Jason - the developer of SageTV Mobile over the past many weeks.  I’m happy to report that streaming TV over WiFi and even 3G works pretty well.  There are some caveats of course, but all-in-all this is a great solution – especially for free!
SageTV Mobile streaming works much like AirVideo for iPhone does.  It takes recordings from your SageTV System and converts (transcodes) those video files to an iPhone/iPad friendly format.  Part of the process includes determining your connection speed between the SageTV server and the mobile device so that the file is small enough to keep up with a slower connection – much like SageTV’s Placeshifter does.  Watching your shows on the iPad is really nice.  I’ve used my iPad to watch shows throughout the house and it really makes a fabulous, carry-with-you “extender” of sorts.  Better yet, the picture quality of the video on the iPad is very good in my exerience – especially on my home Wi-Fi network.  And being able to catch up on a show on your iPhone isn’t too bad either.  I’ve used this on my work Wi-Fi, in the doctors office where other patients and nurses asked me “how’d you do that?”  Obviously video on the iPhone is… well it’s a small screen.  But it works and the picture is pretty good on that small screen.  I wouldn’t watch a ton of TV on my iPhone, but it’s nice to have when you want to – kind of like how I use the Kindle app on my iPhone.

Commercial Skipping The Easy Way – SageTV Commercial Detector

2286827803_d94fb3cb4a_m[1]

One of the big advantages of using Home theater PC’s (HTPC’s) as a DVR over your cable box DVR or even TiVo is commercial skipping.  Matter of fact, the first HTPC feature I shows guests is commercial skipping.  As a commercial begins on any TV show we’re watching time-delayed, we can simply hit the right-arrow button to skip to the end of that commercial.  It makes TV viewing so much better.

The problem is with most HTPC programs installing and setting up commercial skipping is less than easy and often requires multiple programs, time, and some techy know-how.  I’ve just experienced the 2nd easiest commercial skipping installation ever!  (BeyondTV is the easiest by far since commercial skipping is built in – unfortunately BeyondTV is a dead software PVR product.)

CommercialDetector Playback

Let me introduce you to a dead-simple SageTV 7 plugin that allows you to install all commercial skipping and detecting software and set up that software in a few simple steps – all from the user interface.  CommercialDetector is the plugin that makes all of this possible.

About CommercialDetector

CommercialDetector is a SageTV7 plugin that automatically launches Comskip or ShowAnalyzer after a show has recorded or optionally while the show is recording. CommercialDetector produces the “.edl” files that can be read by the Comskip Playback plugin (also available in the UI Mod section of the plugin manager.)

The CommercialDetector plugin automatically installs Comskip (free version) for you when you install it through the SageTV Plugin Manager.  It replaces the more complex (and more sophisticated) programs such as SageJobQueue, DirMon2 and DVRMSToolbox for commercial detection.  The goal for CommercialDetector was to integrate tightly with SageTV, focus on commercial detection, configure & maintain easily within the SageTV UI.

Installation for Windows on the SageTV Server is very simple

  1. Go to Plugin Manager and install the CommercialDetector (Setup>SageTV Plugins>All Available Plugins>General>”Commercial Detector”
  2. In the Plugin Manager, Select and Install the “CommercialDetector UI” [Setup>SageTV Plugins>All Available Plugins>UI Mod>”Commercial Detector UI”]

That’s it for the installation – two steps all from the SageTV User Interface!

Tweaking & Configuring the Commercial Detector Settings

To Configure how CommercialDetector works by adjusting the settings in Setup>SageTV Plugins>Installed Plugins>CommercialDetector

CommercialDetector Configuration 1

Here you will find the following configurable settings right in the SageTV UI:

  • Set number of commercial detecting jobs to run at once (I set this to 3 since I have a quad-core.
  • Location of comskip.exe & comskip.ini programs (this can be left alone unless you install comskip somewhere other than the default location
  • Modify comskip speed (to free up your CPU & disk as needed)
  • Other comskip parameters
  • Cleanup – Comskip tends to leave a mess of text, log and other files behind so you can use this setting to tell it what to remove once the commercial detecting process takes place
  • Configure which channels to comskip or not – You may not want to use up CPU to commercial detect HBO for instance.
  • Begin commercial detection when recording begins (instead of default-after recording complete)  So you can get your commercial detection marked even on liveTV.

There are many, many additional settings available including debug settings, ShowAnalyzer settings etc.  But the bottom line is this – you don’t HAVE to set up anything if you don’t want to.  It just works!  Hats off to the developer of this great plugin – tmiranda.

For more information about setup and settings, head to the Commercial Detector Plugin Wiki

The SageTV Forum Thread is the place to go to discuss and keep updated on new versions of Commercial Detector

Media Center TV Marathon Plugin

Media Center Marathon Icon

As I was browsing the GreenButton forums today I notice a nice, new add-in for MediaCenter – MediaCenter TV Marathon.

The Media Center TV Marathon add-in lets you play multiple series recordings automatically.  Basically, it’s a way to play a TV playlist with a series of TV recordings playing back-to-back without intervention by the user.  Possible uses include:

  • Time shift the 4th of July marathon and play it when you're home.

  • Play the kid's favorite series or movies over and over again.

  • Catch up on a series by watching multiple recordings consecutively.

  • Watch 2-part episodes as a single unit.

SageTV 7 Plugin Spotlight - Horizontal Main Menu

MenuMod1

Now that SageTV7 has been around for a few weeks more and more plugins and add-ins are becoming available through the new plugin manager.  One of the more interesting ones is by the same guy working on the MyMovies for SageTV plugin, pluckyHD.  Today he’s released a horizontal theme called “Plucky’s Theme” and another plugin called “Plucky’s Menu Mod.”

Plucky’s Menu Mod lets you make the following modifications to the main SageTV7 menu:

  • Change the main menu to a horizontal orientation instead of the standard vertical layout
  • Remove items from the main menu
  • Rename main menu items – I’m especially happy about this one as I can now change “Videos” to be called “Movies” like I prefer
  • Move the menu bar to the top, middle or bottom of the screen

Here’s a quick demo video of the theme & menu mod in action:

Below is the options menu:

MenuMod2

And the re-name menu:

Great work by one of the hard working SageTV 3rd party developers!

SageTV 7 – Easy Install & Upgrades with Plugin Manager

One of my favorite new features of the new SageTV 7 HTPC software is the plugin manager.

Installing, upgrading and even uninstalling plugins for SageTV is as easy as a click of the remote control and in most cases can be done from the user interface of SageTV even on your extender.

You can browse the plugins already installed on your SageTV HTPC and check for available updates

Plugin Manager

If there is an update available, it will be noted:

Update Available

You can then view the release notes, download and install the plugin right from the SageTV 7 user interface:

SageTV 7 Plugin Spotlight – Movie Trailers

One of my favorite features of SageTV 7 is the new Plugin Manager.  The plugin manager makes installing, configuring and even uninstalling plugins much easier.  And one of my favorites so far is the Movie Trailers Plugin.

The SageTV 7 Movie Trailers plugins is a pretty simple idea, but adds a lot of convenience to the HTPC user.  Once you’ve installed Movie Trailers you can access movie trailers from the TV Program Guide for any movie and from the Videos sections of SageTV.  If you’re browsing upcoming shows on your TV guide and come across a movie you think you might be interested in, but just aren’t sure check out the Movie Trailer.

And if you’re going through a long list of movies on your HTPC, checking out the movie trailer is the perfect way to figure out what that movie really is about before watching it – at least as long as the trailer isn’t misleading that is...

This plugin is simple and very functional.  Check out this quick, 2-minute demo video I created to demonstrate the Movie Trailer Plugin:

Read more about the plugin at the SageTV Forums.  This plugin was created by koelec & mkanet.
